Last week’s bulletin cover was provocative for many reasons. It is an artists rendering of Galatians 5:16-17, “the Spirit is at war with the flesh…” Why is the Spirit of God at war with the flesh? For many reasons (which were listed in the text). However, the main, all encompassing reason God’s loving, charitable, peaceful, patient and forgiving Spirit is at war with our flesh is to put in an end to self-righteousness. Instead, of allowing us to believe that we make the rules, follow the rules and can therefore judge all others by the rules, God in Christ condemns our rule making, following and abusing and instead says, “the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “’Love your neighbor as yourself.'” (v.14).
Made God grant all of us the ability to carry out HIS command to love others and the humility to acknowledge the futility of making, keeping and measuring others by our homemade rules.
